Why This Embroidery Hoop Artist Wants to Learn how To Create Digital Products: A Blog Tour with Blacksburg Belle

Hello! Today, I’m so excited to be writing a special blog post as part of a blog tour with creative business coach extraordinaire April Bowles-Olin of Blacksburg Belle to spread the word about her upcoming CreativeLive class:  Create Digital Products that Sell While You Sleep.

There are so many reasons why I wanted to participate in this blog tour with April and many of her loyal readers.

#1: I  love digital products.

Before I dove headfirst into running my own business, I was an obsessed avid digital scrapbooker and used Photoshop almost everyday to scrapbook photos of my family. If you’re not familiar with “digi-scrapping”, it’s basically using Photoshop or other graphics program to design scrapbook pages. The finished scrapbook pages live online on personal blogs and galleries. They can also be printed out and stored in traditional scrapbook albums. Many of the digital papers and elements used in digital scrapbooks are purchased online as digital downloads. (I have 4 external hard drives to prove how guilty I am of loving my digital products!)

One of many digital scrapbook pages I’ve made since 2006. Digital elements by Sahlin Studio.

#2: I love CreativeLive.

I was lucky enough to be a studio audience member this past summer at a CreativeLive class on how to start a handmade business taught by the warm and bubbly Kari Chapin. I learned so much from the course and have been a huge CreativeLive fan ever since.

#3. I would love to learn how to create my own digital products one day.

This brings me to the main reason for this post and how April’s Creative Live class can help me. Why do I want to learn how to create and sell digital products? I’ve always been intrigued by digital products since my scrapbooking days and even toyed with the idea of designing my own digital products, specifically scrapbooking products. Fast-forward to 2011 when I started my handmade business, creating embroidery hoop art, wreaths and felt flowers which is about as far away from digital products as you can get.

But, I continue to use my much beloved Photoshop to edit my photos, create logos, ads and graphics for this blog, and my own product tags and business cards (which I print out on my home printer).

Examples of my digital work: 1) Hang tag for hoop art 2) Backing card for my felt flower 3) Felt color chart 4) Tags for flower gift bags 5) Conversation hearts 6) Quote graphic

What other things could I be designing?  Could I really create something digitally that others want to buy? Would it be patterns for my hoop art and wreaths? Instructions on how to create felt flowers? Or an e-book on how to photograph hoop art or other handmade items? The possibilities are very intriguing to me! I would love to learn more about creating digital products and April is the person to help me do it!

Her class,  Create Digital Products that Sell While You Sleep, will broadcast live November 10-11. You can RSVP here to watch it for free! I’ll definitely be tuning in. Here’s what April has to say about her course:

A Gift For You: Free Desktop Wallpaper

If you got to the end of this post, thanks for reading! Before I go, I wanted to share something I made, which seem appropos for this blog post. (Hint: it is a digital product!)  I love quotes and have enjoyed sharing the quotes graphics in the past. Here are few examples I’ve pinned on Pinterest. But the other day, I combined a quote with one of my photos. It’s now my desktop wallpaper (1920 x 1200 px), but if you like and want it for your desktop, you can download it for free here. Enjoy! (And please let me know if you have any problems downloading it.)

  1. Love this post!!!! I too am an obsessed digi scrapper and love Photoshop as well! (Love Sahlin Studio products!). I’m guessing I’ve seen your digi pages in many galleries and not realized it. (When I had more time for scrapping I was active at Oscraps and frequenting The-Lilypad and others and probably saw your pages! I love your style!) I’m so excited to watch for your future digital projects! I can already tell you will be successful! I’m eager to follow your growth and looking forward to connecting in November in the chat audience for Creative Live. How cool that you have been in live audiences before! Wishing you every success and creative joy!

Hi Michael, You totally look familiar! I’m sure I’ve seen your work too. I was on the Two Peas Digi Team for a little while and several other teams like Shabby Jenn, Creashens, Jessica Sprague and Sahlin Studio. Thanks for the vote of confidence! I’m getting more excited this class every moment!

Nice to meet you too! Yes, I highly recommend a CL course as a studio member. It was nerve-wracking at times – it’s live! – but well worth it. I am lucky that CL also has a studio in Seattle, which is very close to where I live. Maybe one day I’ll travel to San Francisco for a CL course…..

  3. Love your photos Cathy ! They all have a unique style and very pretty too !!

Thanks so much Deepa! I LOVE photography. I have been wanting to do MORE photography for a while now. Maybe April’s class will give me some ideas on how to do that.

  4. Could that desktop wallpaper be any prettier? Ummm…I don’t think so. It’s beautiful–just my style and I totally wasn’t expecting it at the end of this post.

Thank you so very much for participating in this blog tour and helping me spread the word about my CL course. I truly hope that my course helps you see so many possibilities for digital products. 🙂

I have really enjoyed visiting your blog for the first time on this blog tour – your photos and artwork are beautiful. And the best thing was jumping across to your Pinterest boards – could get lost there for a very long time! And I totally love the board on introverts. I hadn’t come across it before so was very glad to have found it via you 🙂
